Long before the DNA Project was named Garrisons' Compass, the Compass graphics had become in this
writer's mind a logo for the families of Garrason, Garrison, Garretson and all other spellings.  It represents the
fact that a number of the Name and some of the Blood (descendants with other surnames) share a
commonality: they earned their daily bread with a compass or sextant.  Some were seamen - some were sea
captains.  Some owned ships but perhaps never sailed in them.  Others were land surveyors.  It is easy to
associate mariners and surveyors because a sailor who takes his sextant to dry land can become a competent
land surveyor.  The French de Garrisson family has a coat-of-arms portraying an oak tree which was granted
to an ancestor.  Those of us who cannot connect to that family might have a compass painted on a shield for
our coat-of-arms.
Please submit additional names of and facts about others who belong on this list.
