Gerrit Jansen van Oldenburg was born c1600 in the Grand Duchy (County) of Oldenburg,
Northern Germany. Oldenburg borders with the Netherlands on the West.

Phyllis J Miller, of Fairfield, California thoroughly researched the parentage of Jacob Garrison of Salem
County, New Jersey and has traced him back through Staten Island to New Utrecht in Kings County, Long
Island. Documents in both places established that he had a brother Jan or John. It also was made clear, in her
published report, that Gerrit1 Jansen Van Oldenburg was their father, probably born c1600 in Oldenburg
Germany. As further revealed, Jacob2 gave power of attorney to his brother John to sell his Staten Island land
and moved with his family to southern New Jersey on 14 March, 1691. For the complete report by Phyllis
Miller, see "The Garrison-Gerritsen Descendants of Gerrit Jansen Van Oldenburg alias Gerrit De Mof"; Vol.
124, Number 1 of
The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, dated January 1993.

As revealed by reading the above article, Jacob2 and John2 were the first in their family to use the surname of
Gerritsen or Garrison. This resulted after the English took final possession of New Netherlands in 1674 and
decreed that the Dutch patronymic system be dropped and permanent surnames be adopted.

This decree is significant to the seventeen related participants in the GERRIT JVO Study, because the odds
against any participant in either of the following two groups sharing a most recent common ancestor who was
born earlier than Gerrit JANSEN would be quite large.

With the help of Phyllis Miller's research, several in this study have paper trails leading back to Gerrit Jansen.
The others have been proven by DNA to be related and Gerrit Jansen is most likely the common ancestor to
them all.
